3 Ways to fight off aging this summer

The hot sun, swimming, and staying out late: summer is fun, especially in beautiful Houston. But if you’re not careful, you could wind up with skin that looks and feels less than radiant when fall arrives.

Sun Protection: Beyond the Bottle

You already know that daily use of a good sunscreen is a must to avoid damage to your skin and an increased risk of skin cancer. In fact, excessive sun exposure is the number one cause of aging skin. But even if you apply sunscreen daily, there’s more you should do to keep those UV rays away.

UV protective clothing, which has a UPF rating listed on the tag, has come a long way in recent years. Many fashionable styles are available from various companies. Outdoor and sporting goods stores sell UPF clothing and swimwear, and some companies offer their clothing online. Wearing a good UPF coverup at the beach or throwing on a UPF shirt and hat before you spend time outside is extra insurance against those damaging rays.

When you can, seek shade as well. Avoiding the strongest UV rays in the middle of the day is a good way to avoid sun damage too.

Cleanse Properly

A day’s worth of sunscreen, makeup, oil, sand, and sweat needs to be removed at night before you go to bed. Sleeping with a dirty face can make your pores appear larger over time, and certainly won’t be helping you combat skin conditions such as acne, dryness, or rosacea.

In fact, nighttime is an optimal time to apply active ingredients to your skin because the skin goes through a repair process while you sleep. There’s a reason it’s called “beauty rest!” So even if you’re exhausted after a day of summer fun, don’t miss this opportunity to help your skin look its best. Get rid of the day’s debris every night.

Using Products to Your Advantage

Applying the right products to your face is a must if you want your skin to look as youthful as possible. The problem is, there are so many choices, it’s difficult to know which ones are right for you. The best place to start is with a facial plastic surgeon who has a deep understanding of the face and proper skin care.

Dr. Michel Siegel believes skin care products should deliver real changes to the skin, and unfortunately, many products on the market just don’t deliver. For this reason, he developed a collection of skin care products that penetrate the skin to truly rejuvenate it and help it to look and act younger. He offers patients a careful examination of their skin concerns and recommends products that will produce the best possible results.

Don’t let the summer sun take its toll on your face. Be diligent about sun protection, cleanse every day, and invest your time and energy into products that work so you can have a glowing complexion throughout the year.
