Our 4 Tips for Choosing the Right Filler

Dermal fillers are on the rise. These minimally invasive injectable treatments can help rejuvenate your face. Unlike BOTOX®, which tightens your tissue by preventing your muscles from contracting to form wrinkles, dermal fillers add volume to your face, giving it a youthful, full look while smoothing lines. According to the 2014 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, “soft tissue fillers” were the number two top “cosmetic minimally-invasive procedure,” second only to BOTOX®. 2.3 million patients underwent this treatment last year, up three percent from the previous year’s numbers.

Dr. Michel Siegel often helps patients revitalize their faces with dermal fillers. We offer numerous types, including Juvederm® and Restylane® (which use hyaluronic acid, a compound naturally found in connective tissue), Radiesse® (which uses calcium spheres to fill the tissue), and Sculptra® (a newer form of filler whose active ingredient is poly-L-Lactic acid, a synthetic compound). We offer a wide range of facial dermal fillers to suit each patient’s distinctive needs and particular preferences. In the following blog, we provide our top four tips for choosing the right filler for your face.

1. Know where you want them injected.

Just like in real estate, location is everything when it comes to dermal fillers. Each type works slightly differently for various areas of your face. For example, Dr. Siegel often recommends Juvederm® for smile lines and nasiolabal folds (the wrinkles that form between your nose and mouth), while Restylane® can fill deeper wrinkles around the eyes and acne scars. When you come in for your initial consultation, Dr. Siegel will examine your face, discuss your concerns with you, and create a customized dermal filler treatment plan to match your filler with your needs.

2. Understand how long they last.

While not the only factor, the durability of dermal fillers can influence your treatment choice. Of course, outcomes may vary, but in general, the length of time that each lasts is:

  • Juvederm®: six to twelve months
  • Restylane®: six to twelve months
  • Radiesse®: one year or longer
  • Sculptra®: two years or more

Of course, all dermal fillers require repeated treatments to maintain results.

3. Determine if you’d like to combine treatments.

In many cases, pairing BOTOX® with a dermal filler can provide gorgeous results. You may also decide to use dermal fillers as a complement to facial plastic surgery. For example, you might further enhance the results of a face lift. Dr. Siegel can also utilize dermal fillers in conjunction with other skin treatments like IPL Photofacial Skin Rejuvenation. If you plan to combine procedures, we can help you determine which type of filler would work best with your treatment.

4. Work with a qualified plastic surgeon.

This is by far the most important consideration when planning your facial dermal filler treatment. As an experienced facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Siegel has the in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy and comprehensive understanding of injectable treatments to help you make a smart, successful choice. He can go over the benefits and disadvantages of each product with you at your initial consultation so you can make an informed decision.
