What Fillers Can – and Can’t – Do

Cosmetic fillers have soared in popularity due to their ease of use, minimal downtime, and quick results, but, if you’re looking to combat signs of aging and restore a smoother, more youthful look, will fillers alone do the job?

As with any facial procedure, fillers aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution. That’s why it’s important to see a qualified, skilled facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Michel Siegel to discuss what your aesthetic goals are and how you can best achieve them. He can recommend treatments, both surgical and non-surgical, that suit your budget, preferences, and lifestyle.

With that in mind, it’s helpful to know when fillers may be able to help you and when it’s best to explore other options.

Filling In Wrinkles

Wrinkles and facial folds tend to occur in areas where we have a lot of muscle movement, such as around the mouth (nasolabial folds) and on the forehead. When the skin has been creased from years of expressions, many of these lines can be corrected and “filled in” with Restylane®, JUVÉDERM®, and RADIESSE®. Giving your skin back its natural hydration and collagen below the surface, fillers can provide an immediate, dramatic anti-aging effect that cannot be duplicated with anti-aging creams.

All of these fillers are FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe wrinkles and folds, but only a skilled plastic surgeon can recommend which one may be best for you. Your face shape, skin elasticity, and natural features should be taken into account before a filler is chosen for you.

Enhance the Lips

Many people love the look of plump, pouty lips, but only a lucky few are born with them. In addition, the natural aging process will make lips appear smaller and thinner as the years go by. But, with a dermal filler like Restylane and the skilled hand of a facial plastic surgeon, you can enhance or plump your lips without surgery.

Fillers and BOTOX

The beauty of dermal fillers is their versatility. Sometimes, you may only need one area treated with a filler to get the results you want. Other times, however, a filler can be used to complement other treatments like BOTOX. Most people have seen how BOTOX can effectively smooth forehead lines and frown lines between the eyes. Many patients can benefit from this smoothing effect and use a dermal filler on other facial folds and wrinkles for a complete makeover without surgery.

When Surgery is Best

In some cases, you may decide that the temporary effects of fillers aren’t going to give you the effect you want. In cases of facial sagging, excess skin around the eyes and other areas, or excess fat that needs to be removed, you may wish to explore facial surgery options. But, dermal fillers can be used in conjunction with facial surgery as well, adding fullness to your new, smoother, sleeker facial contours. And if you’re not ready for surgery yet, fillers can give you a temporary boost of confidence and youthfulness while you decide if surgery may be right for you.
