When is it time for a facelift?

With any plastic surgery, you need to think about who, what, and when. Who will perform your procedure, what do you wish to have done, and when is the best time for your surgery?

In the case of a facelift, is there a “right time” to have it done? You may feel that your face doesn’t look as youthful and sculpted as it once did, and you may be wondering whether you should consider facelift surgery– or whether minimally invasive options may be enough.

Consider Your Individual Concerns

Whether or not it’s time for a facelift depends upon many factors that you can see when you look in the mirror. Although fillers can address many signs of aging such as creases, wrinkles, and loss of fullness, they cannot replace a facelift for sagging or drooping features.

If you notice that the lower portion of your face appears to be pulling downward, then a facelift may give you the improvement you want. Issues like jowls, drooping cheeks, and sagging in the neck can be effectively addressed with a well-done facelift. Can you see a clear distinction between the lower part of your face and your neck? If not, a facelift may be what you need to look youthful and vibrant again.

No Magic Number

There is no “right age” to have a facelift. Every face has different genetic features that will make it age more or less quickly than another. And, your degree of sun exposure, skin type, and some lifestyle factors play a role in your skin’s degree of aging and drooping. Some facelift patients are in their 40s, while others may be 10, 20, or 30 years older. It’s a very individual decision that only you can make.

If you decide to consider a facelift, no matter what your age, there is one important task you need to complete. Get an honest and educated opinion from a facial plastic surgeon who can tell you whether a facelift will benefit you. In some cases, cosmetic injectables, or laser or chemical peels may be ideal if you do not yet have significant sagging of the facial structures.

A Less Invasive Facelift

With the right plastic surgeon, you can reap all the benefits of a facelift without general anesthesia and a long recovery. A skilled surgeon can perform a “mini facelift” that addresses the key areas of the lower face and upper neck in a procedure that involves less downtime and smaller incisions. Make sure you view before and after photos of the surgeon’s facelift patients, looking for results that look natural, not pulled or over tightened.
