Resurfacing and skin tightening remove old skin and signal your body to make new skin. These procedures discard the superficial skin layer (the epidermis), and penetrate to the deep skin layer (the dermis). The dermis is made of collagen, long fibers that loosen and stretch with age and sun damage. By penetrating the dermis, new collagen is formed to give your skin a more elastic and younger appearance. Then, as you heal, a new epidermis (top layer) forms, restoring a more youthful you.

Your recovery from these methods will depend on the depth of penetration in the dermis. Superficial chemical skin tightening that only removes the top layers of skin usually heals in about one week. Deeper tightening agents—such as laser resurfacing—provide more dramatic and longer-lasting results. But, because of their deeper skin penetration, these solutions take several weeks to heal.
