One of the most sought-after nose shapes is commonly referred to as the “Barbie nose.”  Like the nose of its famous namesake, it is relatively small, with a gentle curve along the bridge, and a slightly upturned tip. This shape is refined, elegant, and graceful.  Some describe this kind of nose as feminine, cute, or both.  As you’d guess, “Barbie nose surgery” (colloquially a “Barbie nose job”) can help one achieve that look.  If that’s the exact look you’re going for, or you’re considering the Barbie nose as one of features that will complete the face you’ve always wanted to see in the mirror, contact Dr. Michel Siegel in Houston, or read on to find out more.

“Barbie rhinoplasty” vs. traditional rhinoplasty

All rhinoplasty procedures involve both adding structure to your nose and reshaping what is there already. In that sense a Barbie rhinoplasty is no different from any other rhinoplasty.

The main difference is that the goal of a Barbie rhinoplasty is always pretty much the same, whereas in most nose surgeries the goal varies from one case to the next.  A standard rhinoplasty is performed to make a correction or improvement, of course, but the specific shape the patient wants or gets depends on her or his “starting point” and goals, as well as on the surgeon’s vision and competence.  By contrast, Barbie rhinoplasties are also performed for correction and improvement, but they have the extra goal of creating a very specific nose shape.

What happens in “Barbie” nose surgery?

Depending on what is best for your individual needs, Dr. Siegel may make incisions inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or across the narrow strip of tissue between the nostrils (open rhinoplasty).  To add structure to your nose, he will use either a silicone implant or a cartilage graft. There are a variety of techniques he can use for reshaping, including ultrasonic shaping, which is more gentle than traditional methods.

Is a Barbie nose right for you?

While researching this surgery, you may have seen negative articles about Barbie rhinoplasties, saying that they are a passing trend, and showing the extreme noses some people get.  One can make that argument about just about any type of surgery, whether it is for one’s nose, neck, breast, or hair.  That line of criticism is no more or less valid here.  Of course ill-advised or poorly executed surgeries stick out in all the wrong ways, whereas a good surgery is “invisible” in that it looks natural and reflective of the person.

Like all rhinoplasty procedures, the Barbie rhinoplasty needs to be done with ample input from the patient, and with skill, restraint, judgment, moderation, and artistry.  Many of the unsatisfactory results you see are from surgeons pushing the operation too far, or performing it on people who are not good candidates for the procedure to begin with.  Under those conditions any type of plastic surgery can become a problem, and it’s a wonder that some of them still turn out OK.

A Barbie nose looks beautiful when done for the right person, by the right person.
