Why Get a Lip Augmentation?
Some people are drawn to lip augmentation because they dislike the current appearance of their lips—whether because they’re thin, asymmetrical, or problematic in some other way. This group often simply hopes for a more normal appearance, and lip augmentation is capable of achieving precisely that. Other people seek out the procedure more as a matter of style: they may have no problem with their existing lips, but want to try something more dramatic or make a fashion statement. A lot of celebrities belong to this second group, which explains the recent rise in popularity of the plumper variety of lip enhancement.
What Does It Involve?
Modern lip augmentation typically involves the injection of a hyaluronic acid filler into the lips, which gives them extra body, shape, and structure. Hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in your body, is safer and longer-lasting than the old collagen fillers. It also gives the surgeon a lot of control over the end-result: an experienced facial plastic surgeon with a strong aesthetic sense will be able to get excellent results using this method.
Perhaps the best part of all is that any errors can easily be fixed by dissolving a small part of the filler. Lip augmentation can also be performed across several consultations, for gradual step-by-step enhancement. This is ideal for people who aren’t quite sure if they want to commit to anything drastic just yet. The injections do cause a degree of swelling, but this generally resolves within 2–3 days.
How Long Does It Last?
The word “commit” in the last paragraph is actually an overstatement, because the dermal fillers used in lip augmentation don’t last forever. They usually begin to break down after about six months to one year, after which you’ll need further injections to maintain the improved appearance of your lips. If you change your mind about your new look at any point, the procedure can easily be reversed.
Another important thing to note: stay away from home-based methods for lip enhancement such as “cupping”—and don’t let yourself be fooled by celebrity endorsements. These methods can cause lasting damage to your skin and lips, or unsightly bruising at the very least. If you’re serious about making an improvement to your lips, be sure to make an appointment with a certified plastic surgeon.
