Spicy Facelifts

Most patients ask me what can they do to speed up the healing, especially the swelling and bruising after a facelift?

In the past I would offer a short burst of steroids, which come with their own associated potential side effects, or the use of Arnica Montana, a natural supplement sold over the counter. Aspirin and Ibuprofen and other over the counter anti-inflammatory medications are a no-no before and after surgery as they increase the risk of bleeding.

There is another option, not often offered in Plastic Surgery – Spices!

Minerals, such as sulfur, silicon, zinc, iron and magnesium, have natural anti-inflammatory properties. Enriching your diet with these elements found in common daily spices can shorten your recovery time, by speeding your body’s natural healing properties.

Ginger, Garlic, Cinnamon, and Turmeric are natural spices that contain these elements. Incorporating them into your daily nutrition before and after surgery can have beneficial effects.

Adding these spices to your cooking, or incorporating them into a juicing routine, is an easy way to naturally boost your immune system and help your body strengthen your natural anti-inflammatory process.
