Why It Doesn’t Pay to Get a “Bargain” Rhinoplasty

We’re all looking to get the best possible prices on the things we want or need. Whether it’s your weekly groceries or a new jacket, no one wants to pay more than necessary. But when it comes to your face, is it worth it to bargain-shop?

Unfortunately, a “bargain” for a procedure such as a rhinoplasty usually isn’t a bargain at all. If it’s not done right, you don’t get the proper care after your surgery, or complications arise, you could end up paying much more – and have an undesirable result you have to deal with.

Plastic Surgery Abroad

Despite the risks, some people have chosen to dangerously travel to other countries for cheaper plastic surgery, known as “medical tourism.” During their trip, they may have a combination vacation and surgical procedure and then come home. Unfortunately, it’s not as luxurious as it sounds. Any time you use a surgeon who is not board certified and properly trained in your procedure, especially abroad, you may be taking unnecessary risks:

  • When you come home, you no longer have contact with your surgeon for critical follow-up care.
  • You may not have any legal rights in the U.S. for a procedure that was done incorrectly in another country.
  • Traveling by airplane or car and doing other activities when you are supposed to be recovering from your rhinoplasty (or any surgery) can be harmful to your healing process, leaving you with health problems or complications.

Your Surgeon’s Experience and Specialty

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make about your rhinoplasty procedure is not “what,” but “who.” You’ll need the care and expertise of a surgeon who truly knows how to sculpt and shape a nose to flatter your individual features and enhance your natural beauty. If you choose a surgeon who does a little of everything and doesn’t specialize in faces and noses, you’re not getting the best possible results from your rhinoplasty. Ask any potential surgeon about his or her areas of specialty – and always ask to see before and after photos of their work. Unfortunately, revision rhinoplasties are common (and costly), and many could be avoided if they were initially done by a board certified facial plastic surgeon with the right experience and expertise in facial anatomy.

The Important Role of Your Nose

When it comes to medical care, including plastic surgery, cheaper is not better. Your face and your nose may be your most valuable assets when it comes to your appearance. Your nose is a prominent, highly individual part of your face. It’s part of who you are, and it’s a big part of your personality and attractiveness. Don’t jeopardize your face to save some money now. It could end up costing you much more in the long run.
