Cosmetic surgery is never something you should rush into. Once you’ve chosen a promising-looking surgeon and establish which procedures you’re interested in, it’s important to sit down and have a comprehensive discussion with your surgeon.
We recommend you ask at least the following ten questions before locking anything in:
About The Surgeon
1) Are you a board-certified plastic surgeon?
When a surgeon is board-certified, it means that they’re deemed capable to perform the surgeries covered by their board certification. Some inexperienced or dubious surgeons may not be board-certified, and you generally want to avoid these.
As an example: Dr. Siegel is certified by both the AAOHNS (American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery) and the AAFPRS (American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery).
2) What’s your degree of experience and expertise in the procedure I’m considering?
Board certification isn’t everything. You should also make sure that your surgeon has experience with the specific procedure you’re after. If you’re interested in a nose job, for instance, your ideal surgeon is a rhinoplasty specialist who has performed hundreds of them.
3) Am I a good candidate for cosmetic surgery?
Not everyone is a good candidate for surgery. Discuss your expectations and your lifestyle with your plastic surgeon, and ask him or her to review your medical history.
4) Is this really the best procedure for me?
Even if the surgeon is convinced you’ll benefit from surgery, it’s worth asking whether there are any other alternatives you should consider. Sometimes, procedures such as nonsurgical rhinoplasty may be a better starting point.
About The Surgery
5) What will the surgery involve?
Not many people forget to ask this question – but it can’t be emphasized enough. Before going into surgery, try to get the clearest possible idea of what the surgeon plans to do. You don’t want to find this out when you look in the mirror afterwards!
6) What will a fantastic/poor result look like?
Your expectations should match the expectations of your surgeon. You need to have a clear idea of the best-case scenario, as well as the worst.
7) Can you show me before/after photos of similar surgeries you’ve performed?
Seeing before/after photos of the surgeon’s other clients is one of the best ways of ensuring you’re both on the same page.
8) What kind of anesthesia will be involved?
Find out if the surgeon will be using local or general anesthetic, and ask whether the person who will administer it is qualified to do so. They should be a board-certified physician anesthesiologist, or a certified registered nurse anesthetist.
Logistics & Pricing
9) What should I expect during recovery?
This is another very important question to ask. You should find out your expected recovery time, how much time you should take off work, and what steps you can take to make this period as quick and seamless as possible.
10) How much will the procedure cost in total?
Make sure you get the total figure, not just the price of the first session (if there will be multiple sessions).
